The story

What we bring may be little. When offered with love, it becomes priceless.

He came with nothing fit for a king. Yet Krishna did not see the poverty of the gift. He saw the love hidden inside it.

The Four Handfuls of Love is a tender retelling of the timeless friendship between Krishna and Sudama—a story of humility, devotion, gratitude, and a love that cannot be measured by wealth or status.

For anyone who has ever felt too small, too poor, or too ordinary to be loved completely, this book offers an unforgettable assurance: what we bring may be little. When it is offered with love, it becomes priceless.

From the authors

Why We Wrote This Book

For many years, the account of Krishna and Sudama seemed to us like a simple story about a poor brahmana visiting his childhood friend and returning home blessed with extraordinary wealth.

But as we studied this historical occurrence in the Srimad-Bhagavatam and reflected upon the insights of the Vaishnava acharyas, we discovered something far more profound. Beneath its simple narrative lay timeless lessons about friendship, gratitude, humility, devotion, divine reciprocation, and the nature of love itself.

What moved us most was not the idea of a destitute person receiving great fortune. In fact, that may be the least important part of the story.

At its heart, this is a story about friendship—a love untouched by the vast distance between a king and a poor brahmana. It speaks of a God who remembers, and of a devotee who never forgets.

Sudama did not merely bring four handfuls of chipped rice; he brought love. The rice was only the packaging he could best afford. Krishna did not merely give Sudama immense riches; He too gave love. The riches were only the packaging.

They both gave love. Everything else was only the wrapping.

We wrote this book because we wanted readers to encounter the Krishna–Sudama story not merely as an ancient account from a sacred text, but as a timeless exploration of the human heart and its eternal relationship with the Divine.

A Cool Breeze on a Scorching Afternoon

What a book ! No deal of words can probably describe my reading experience of the book. I was pretty sure that it was going to be somewhat informative; little had I imagined that information was only one of its features, and that I was in for a super-thrilling, adventurous, emotional, dramatic and enlightening reading experience. The Krishna-Sudama story is not new to us, but being able to see through the perspectives of the characters, especially Sudama, Sushila and Lord Krishna Himself, is what this book named The Four Handfuls of Love offers. The authors have successfully curated every episode with such thought, care and precision that the scene stands right in front of the reader's eyes, and makes the reader experience and witness the story not merely as a passive reader, but as an active participant or character of the story itself. This keeps the reader hooked on with the excitement to know what happens next. Besides, every chapter is replete with valuable takeaways in the form of inferential messages. Anyone who wishes to understand, appreciate and relish the real depth and purity of the friendship between Krishna and Sudama, must read this book. Believe me, the way you see the Krishna-Sudama relationship will never be the same. One special feature of the book is that it conveys the deepest messages in the simplest words making it perfectly suitable even for kids. Interestingly, the one theme that runs invariably across all the chapters, and that I would call 'the icing on the cake' is Krishna's sweetness. We often feel that our intent and acts of love and service go unnoticed by people, or lack the kind of reciprocation they deserve. But here is the quintessence of what it means to reciprocate. Nobody other than Krishna could have reciprocated Sudama's devotion better. What was it after all that Krishna gave Sudama? Riches? Wealth? Material possessions? Or something beyond all this? And did it actually make up for the four handfuls Sudama had carried for Krishna? To know the answers to these questions, I urge one and all to read on. Of the few books I have read, this is undoubtedly the best one. I thank the authors for authoring this book and making it available for all. It is like a cool breeze on a scorching afternoon.

Real friendship. Heart touching. A must read.

The Four Handfuls of Love is a beautiful and deeply moving exploration of the profound love that can exist within a lifelong friendship. Far too often, literature reserves its highest praises of intimacy for romantic couples, but this narrative serves as a refreshing reminder that the bonds of a platonic soulmate can be just as fierce, transformative, and enduring.
